Phone calls demanding payment are scams. Please do not pay over the phone. This goes for scammers claiming to be the IRS as well as law enforcement. Please see the notes below from the Anchorage Police Department:
NO POLICE DEPARTMENT WILL CALL YOU AND ASK YOU FOR MONEY. HANG UP.
It’s happening again…..
We spoke with a citizen today who had received multiple phone calls from someone posing as an officer with an Alaskan Police Department located outside of Anchorage. The caller claimed the citizen had a warrant and would be arrested if the citizen did not wire them money via Western Union.
No police department will call you and demand payment for anything over the phone. If you receive any call like that, hang up. Do not answer calls from phone numbers you do not recognize; let them go to voicemail. Please report scams online to the Federal Trade Commission at FtcComplaintAssistant.gov. If you fall victim to a scam and suffer a financial loss, please also report the scam online to the Anchorage Police Department at www.AnchoragePolice.com.
